Marhaba! Welcome to Dubai, where everything is possible
What once began as a small fishing village is now one of the largest metropolises in the world. Dubai is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates. It is home to a total of almost 200 nationalities, of various ethnicities and faiths.
Dubai offers an unforgettable experience to its visitors. Whether on the banks of the Dubai Creek or atop the Burj Khalifa (the world’s tallest building), the region exudes opportunity and innovation. The coastline, desert and skyline are also unrivalled.
Seven blissful neighbourhoods
Dubai has various attractions. There is something for everyone in the 7 neighbourhoods:
- In the centre of Dubai, you can shop to your heart’s content while enjoying iconic sights and promenades.
- If you love the beach, Jumeira is the place to be. Here you can stroll along the beaches, looking for the best restaurants.
- From Jumeira beach, you can see Palm Island (the Palm Jumeira). Everyone knows the iconic island, created by man in the shape of a palm tree. Here you can find water sports, aquariums, amusement parks … and of course boutiques.
- The old neighbourhood of Deira, on the other hand, is bursting with culture and history. The best souks are undoubtedly found here.
- If you really want to enter the history books, you should go to Bur Dubai. As you watch the authentic fishermen at work, you realise how Dubai was once created.
- Perhaps you prefer trendy coffee shops, art exhibitions and a bit of industrial-style architecture? Then Al Quoz is the best neighbourhood to explore.
- Finally, Al Barsha is the place to be for real adventurers. A morning of indoor skiing, followed by karting? Designer shops and good food? It can all be found here.

History of Dubai
Dubai has a fairly short history. It was not until the 18th century that it became a real settlement. In 1830, the Bani Yas tribe, led by the Al Maktoum family, took control of Dubai from the British. The Dubai Creek area was then used as a natural harbour. And so began the story, from fishing port to trading port and commercial centre. Because of this, the souk in Deira also flourished, with hundreds of traders displaying their wares here.
In the period that followed, many recessions and wars raged in the world. With all the consequences this has for the world economy … and the development of Dubai. It was only in 1966, with the discovery of oil, that the impressive growth of the United Arab Emirates really began. Oil revenues were mainly invested in tourism and trade to ensure a future beyond this finite source of income.
In 1971, the British left Dubai and the United Arab Emirates were founded. This fact is still celebrated annually on National Day. And the growth? It has never stopped since.
